Articles & Whitepapers
iMEC periodically publishes articles and whitepapers on a variety of topics related to Instrumentation, Measurement, Environmental and Control issues, on our website and in industry publications. The articles and whitepapers can be downloaded in their entirety here.
Flare Measurement - A Global Perspective
Flare gas measurement remains a key element of oil & gas operations today. The World Bank estimates that over 150 billion cubic meters of natural gas is flared or vented annually, an amount worth approximately 30.6 billion dollars, equivalent to 25% of the United States’ gas consumption or 30% of the European Union’s gas consumption per year.
Liquid Meter Proving Techniques
Producers and shippers are becoming more and more aware of the importance of accurate measurement. Their bottom line depends on it. Not only does this relate to the actual product value, but in relation to environmental considerations it also has implications associated with regulatory compliance and integrity management. As a result, measurement accuracy is being scrutinized more vigorously than in the past. This article discusses liquid meter proving techniques to ensure accurate metering results.
Facility Schematics - A New Approach
In response to ever-changing government regulations, the industry needs a better, more efficient way to manage and report changes in the field. Recently, AER Directive 17 was revised to include specific regulations that require all licensed, operating facilities in Alberta have accurate, up-to-date metering schematics for measurement, accounting and reporting purposes. The British Columbia Measurement Guidelines for Upstream Oil and Gas section 1.9 essentially mirrors the AER Regulation. Schematics are to be reviewed regularly, updated at least annually and must meet specific criteria. This article discusses options for the generation and management of measurement schematics.
Flare Measurement - Advanced Ultrasonics
Flare gas measurement remains a key element of oil & gas operations today. The World Bank estimates that over 150 billion cubic meters (or 5.3 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas is being flared and vented annually. This is equivalent to 25 per cent of the United States’ gas consumption, 30 per cent of the European Union’s gas consumption, or 75 per cent of Russia’s gas exports. (This paper was presented at the South East Asia Flow Measurement Conference).
